GamingSports lawMalta Lotteries and Gaming Authority signs MoU with FIFA and ESSA

April 20, 2012

The Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LGA) has recently entered into two collaborative Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) in the interests of protecting and maintaining the integrity of football and sports betting; one with FIFA’s in-house agency on sport integrity, the FIFA Early Warning System GmbH (EWS) and another with the European Sports Security Association (ESSA).

Both MoUs seek to enhance the cooperation between the LGA and other organisations in the avoidance of the manipulation of sports events and competitions. The LGA, in collaboration with its licensed operators, shall provide the necessary assistance to ensure the effective workings of these entities. The MoUs ensure that the LGA and its licensees exchange betting-related information to assist the investigation of betting patterns or insider betting connected with sporting events and competitions.

Commenting on the important collaboration between the LGA and FIFA’s EWS, the Minister of Finance, the Economy and Industry, Tonio Fenech said that such an arrangement “reflects the importance that the Maltese Legislation places on game fairness in all senses.”

Malta is a jurisdiction with a very strict gaming legislation as well as a specific legal framework aimed at preventing corruption in sports.
