Firm NewsMaltaTrainees’ Programme – Andrew’s Testimonial

March 23, 2023

In continuation of our launch of our Trainees’ Programme, we have sat down with Andrew Grech, our current trainee associate who has joined our firm in July 2022.

Andrew came to our firm eager to learn what’s it’s like working at a law firm. The following is what he had to say on his current experience undergoing his prattika:

Can you elaborate on your current experience in the trainee’s programme? what have you learned so far and what’s special about our programme that has led you to apply with us?

I am a Master of Advocacy student and I joined the firm last summer as a trainee following my completion of the 4-year Bachelor of Laws (Honours) course. This is my first experience working in a law firm and I can say that it has been a very positive one; an experience which has served as an introduction into the legal world where the theory learned at University is put into practice.

From the first day of my traineeship, I was made to feel very involved in various tasks and as a result I feel that I have learned so much over the past few months and have gained valuable knowledge in different legal fields such as Corporate M&A, Shipping and Real Estate.

Now carrying out my pupillage (prattika) with the firm, I continue to be exposed to various legal scenarios and I can definitely say that I learn something new every day. While the transition from theory to practice may be challenging, the team made me feel very welcome and always ensured that I was properly understanding the tasks I was assisting them with. Furthermore, I am always encouraged to ask questions and to seek clarification when in doubt. In fact, I believe that the environment at David Zahra & Associates is conducive to this in that the team is always ready to help and to answer any questions I may have.

What’s the one advice would you give to your fellow law students who are thinking of joining our trainnee’s programme?

One piece of advice I would offer is to be open to experiencing different areas of law. I would say that this is definitely an advantage of this firm’s trainee programme as you are exposed to various practice areas and in turn you are able to formulate a better opinion of your preferred legal fields. This also keeps the traineeship interesting as you are constantly dealing with different areas of law.
