Transport Malta’s Merchant Shipping Directorate has released the new Commercial Yacht Code (CYC) 2025, which will replace the current CYC 2020.
The updated code introduces a modernised and streamlined framework for the certification and operation of commercial yachts under the Maltese flag.
It aims to better address the practical needs of the yachting sector while ensuring continued compliance with international regulations and safety standards.
Key updates introduced in the CYC 2025 include:
- Revised technical standards reflecting advances in yacht construction, design, and onboard safety systems
- Enhanced safety and operational guidelines aligned with international conventions and best practices
- Clearer definitions and categorisation of yacht types and operations
- Updated compliance procedures covering inspections, documentation, and certification
- A focus on simplification and usability for owners, operators, and surveyors
The new code is designed to be more responsive to current market demands, while promoting regulatory clarity and commercial viability.
The CYC 2025 will come into effect on 1 July 2025 and will apply to all commercial yachts.
Yachts already certified under CYC 2020, or currently undergoing surveys, will be required to comply with the new code by their first renewal survey taking place after 31 December 2025.
It is also good to note that while the code is mandatory for commercial yachts, private yachts under 500 GT are encouraged to comply with its standards on a voluntary basis, where reasonable and practicable
