The Merchant Shipping Directorate within Transport Malta has issued a revised notice (Merchant Shipping Notice 108 Rev 4) announcing updated minimum basic wage thresholds for able seafarers, as mandated under Rule 51 of the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour Convention) Rules.
Under the updated schedule:
- As from 1 January 2026, the minimum monthly basic wage will increase to USD 690.
- From 1 January 2027, it will further rise to USD 704.
- By 1 January 2028, the rate will reach USD 715.
These amounts are expressed in U.S. Dollars or their equivalent in the currency specified in the crew agreement.
The notice serves as a reminder to all shipowners, operators, managers, masters, and recognised organisations to ensure compliance with the updated wage standards in advance of the effective dates.
